Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account?
Yes — a free account with Google, so your progress, your history and the words you missed follow you across devices and between the web app and the Chrome extension.
Which languages can I learn?
English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Catalan: the seven we have tested. The subtitles come from YouTube, we do not create them: some are written by the video's own author and others are generated by the platform, so quality varies.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, the web app runs in the phone's browser with nothing to install. The extension does not: it is Chrome on a computer only.
How is Gappier different from other language apps?
Most of them write the sentences for the lesson and record them slowly, in a neutral accent. Here the audio is whatever it is: people talking fast, swallowing words, with the accent they happen to have.
Can I answer by speaking?
Yes, with the mic button, on the web and in the extension. You can say just the word or the stretch of the line around it, and on Hard and Expert the whole line, which fills all its gaps at once. If the mic hears something else, it does not count as a miss. Your voice is recognised by your browser — on the device itself when it can — and never reaches us. It works in Chrome, Edge and Safari; not in Firefox.
